Project Overview
J-Fit
Designing a Habit-Forming Fitness App The project addressed the common frustration of "boring routines and fading motivation" that prevents users from achieving their fitness goals. As the UX Designer, I created a product that supports the creation of "habit-forming engagement". The final solution integrates variable rewards and high engagement design to foster long-term consistency.

User Interviews
To better understand the problem, I did some secondary research and interviewed 5 young adults about the challenges they face in reaching their fitness goals.
Key Insights
Common challenges they share are low motivation, procrastination, and inconsistent routine, especially with fitness, where they crave fun and engaging activities over boring workouts.
Users crave fun and engagement, yet market solutions often feel transactional rather than habit-forming.
Market Research
To understand the current landscape of jumping jack fitness applications, I conducted a competitive audit and a 5-day immersive evaluation of the top-rated apps in the category.
Key Insights
Most existing jumping jack applications function as digital tally counters rather than fitness partners, resulting in boring routines that fail to sustain long-term user interest.
Many apps have cluttered interfaces that make starting a 2-minute workout feel like a chore.

Key Strategic Pivot
Instead of building another simple tracker, the project strategy will focus on a reward-based program designed to create habit-forming engagement. By replacing predictable routines with variable rewards and anticipation, we can bridge the gap between starting a routine and maintaining a lifestyle.
Reasoning
These insights helped me move into the ideation phase. I created a storyboard and used the KANO model to identify key features. Furthermore, I utilized the MoSCoW method to prioritize them into Must-Have, Should-Have, Could-Have, and Won’t-Have categories. This structured approach established a strong foundation for the entire project.

Hook Model
I applied the Hooked Model, designed for habit-forming applications, to create a system that helps users sustainably achieve their goals.
This model enhances engagement by gently shaping behavior, motivating users to return and interact consistently with the product.

B-M-L Framework
With this, I applied the Build, Measure, Learn framework to enable rapid learning and fast development.
The core aim of this cycle is to 'minimize the time through the loop,' ensuring quick iterations and improvements.
The Solution: Behavioral Design
J-Fit is a jumping jacks fitness app that helps users stay consistent with their movement goals by combining habit-building mechanics, streak tracking, and a reward-based progression system. It motivates users through playful competition, milestone celebrations, and personalized reminders throughout the day.
A habit-forming application that leverages the strategies of the Hooked Model, incorporating the Trigger, Action, Variable Reward, and Investment phases loop to drive engagement and long-term behavior change.
J-Fit Notification
THE TRIGGER
Personalized, high-energy push notifications and smart reminders that prompt the user to start their daily session.
Frictionless Workout Logging
THE ACTION
To ensure the user follows through, I designed a wrongfully smooth interface.
The path from opening the app to starting the jumping jacks is reduced to a single tap. By lowering the cognitive load, the action becomes effortless, preventing decision fatigue.
Dynamic Reward Claming
THE VARIABLE REWARD
After completing a session, users receive variable rewards ranging from digital scratch cards and surprise boxes to unlocking unique badges.
This is the core differentiator of J-Fit. Instead of a predictable workout complete screen, users receive Variable Rewards.
Maintain Progress
THE INVESTMENT
To close the loop, users invest back into the app through 30-day streaks and milestone tracking.
As streaks grow, they unlock even bigger surprises, increasing the sunk cost for the user. The more effort they invest, the more valuable the experience becomes, making it harder to break the habit.

Usability Tests Findings
To ensure the Hooked model translated into a seamless user experience, I conducted moderated testing to identify friction points and measure engagement.
